Where Do We Use Myrrh? Myrrh is used both by the Church and by the Believer.
The church uses myrrh during the celebration of the sacrament of anointing after baptism in order to give the gifts of the Holy Spirit, for the anointing of people who become Orthodox Christians from other denominations, for the consecration of the Holy Altar in new churches, the establishment of objects and icons and the collection of holy relics.
Believers use myrrh to perfume the iconostasis or their space and in some cases as a therapeutic product as it has such actions.
What does Myros symbolize and what does it consist of? Holy Myrrh symbolizes the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The components of Agios Myros mentioned in the Patriarchal List are 57 and are as follows: Pure oil, Honeyed wine, Anthoneron of the best quality, Rose stamen of the best quality, Mastic pure, Medjubi or Gum fragrant, Amomon, Xylalou maverti, Long pepper, Carya aromatics, Indian leaf, Wood cassia i.e. Bohemian angelica, Styrax liquid, Pure myrrh, Peppers, Echinacea, Wood balsamon, Acorus or Kalamos evidos, Iris florentini, Baccharis or instead Emperatoria (saffron), Aristolochia vera, Carpobalsamon or Kuvevi, Cypress, Myrisinococca, Celtic nard, Black cassia or instead Cascarilla oper esti phloios ambareos, Valanos myrepsiki ) or Marjoram, Pure Frankincense, Spikenard Indian, White Lebanon, White Zingiberis, Zarnavas, Tullis and Elenion. After baking, add: Ceylon cinnamon oil, Caryophyllum oil, Rosehip oil or rose oil, Maceris oil, Citrus oil, Balsam oil, Samsych oil, Laurel oil, Rosemary oil, Lavender or lavender oil, Indian musk, Ambergris, Hollandaise nutmeg oil s pekton, Balsamon Mecca, i.e. balsamic oil.
